Golden Gallopers at Elvaston
We’ve also seen superb support from fellow club members across all events and on a day to day basis on social media and strava too with words of support, encouragement, wisdom and maybe even a little bit of friendly rivalry and banter. It’s great to see and experience. Keep it up guys…it’s what ‘team work’ is all about!

Members Member Vote
Deadline: 10th November

Every year at the Christmas Party and Awards night we celebrate out lovely little club and highlight some of the years achievements.

Celebrating not only the Club Champs winners, the Captains Awards but also the 'Members Member'. This is where you get the opportunity to vote for the Club Member who has either: inspired you; made you feel welcome and part of the club; advised and supported you; who you think best represents the club (teamwork; cheerleading); who has made a comeback from injury.....it can be for any number of reasons.

So, using the link below enter the name of the person you want to vote for (ideally first name and surname or first letter of surname if you're not sure along with a description of your reason for voting).

We are happy to keep names anonymous but we do need your name for the vote itself as it's one vote per person. You can *try* and vote for yourself but I'm afraid it won't count :-)

Yorkshire Marathon:
As most of you know a few of us completed the Yorkshire Marathon last Sunday. Jo (her first), Becky Archer (her first), Rowan, Ross, Dougal and myself took to the roads of York and the surrounding villages along with 4000+ runners.

Whilst we each had our own very special experiences (!) the overall consensus is that it’s a well organised event, with friendly and vocal marshalls, great crowd support in the villages (and a few bands here and there thrown in) and a quality medal at the end – with your name shouted out by the commentator at the finish. John confirms as a spectator ‘…’lovely all you can eat breakfast, nice museums to visit and good spectating opportunities’.

The only issue really is that it’s 6 miles too far….#thatdamnedwall

Race Report: DRXC 1

A dry and sunny, if slightly cool Sunday Morning greeted members of MRC as we met up just by the gate of the Legion to car share for the first race in the new season of the XC. Gathered were some familiar faces, but also newer faces to the club – and it was great to see them all. Who went with who was sorted and we ventured off to Anslow and the Equestrian Centre, the base for the race. On arrival, John B and Jake helped put the flag up announcing our arrived, as I waited for Clive to show him the paperwork of the XC – it’s not hard, just needs to be done.

Everyone counted, we had an excellent turnout of 22+ members running – shout out to Hannah J (I suspect it wasn’t her first XC), Bobby, Dal, Lee (in MRC colours), Paul D and Phyliss – the first XC for them.

This is an excellent course – not too hilly and has the now infamous tree to hurdle over and the water feature. A small lap, followed by 2 larger laps was the route which meant 3x through the water and I didn’t fall in it :D – yeah!

So, who did what? Well, for the Men, Wilf was first home (24) with John B 2nd (56) which was a fantastic run, Lee (60), James S (65). Marc E just got a head of me up the hill (81, 82) with Paul D and Bobby C making up the means team (86, 87). Completing the full complement of Men were Clive (99), Al W (101), Jake R (105), Dal (110) and Rob H (133) – still suffering from a cold. As for the Ladies, Hannah was first home in 3rd overall, Emma (10), Beckie (24) and Kellie (44) making up the team scoring points. Other Ladies running: Nic (62), Jacqui (66), Tina (71), Phyliss (85) and Kathryn (96). Fantastic running by all in heavy conditions so congrats to all and everyone – it seemed like everyone enjoyed it, and the next one is about 4-5 weeks 24th Nov hosted by Peel Runners at Cliff Lakes, Tamworth. It is a new venue – even for me, so no idea about the course :D.

In the past, Vicky & I had the pleasure of nominating a runner of the day. As Vicky was in York cheering on the marathoners, I had a discussion with Clive ‘the Trainee’. Honourable mention must go to John B for his run, 56th today but he travels from Leeds (ok, he goes to watch the Rams as well), but joins in with races when he can. However, it really has to go to Hannah for her 3rd place and a podium finish, well done to Hannah & John – but everyone who ran did superbly and the club camaraderie was great to see.

As many of you know, I stepped down from my committee roles, inc Club Capt, over the summer – so this is a bit of a swansong report in the ‘role’. It has been very much an honour to be the first Club Captain and to promote events to all members (who listen and read up) on the XC, Livingston Relays, Hairy Helmet – to name a few events - as well as trying to keep a watch on all our members as they have ran various events over the world and to highlight the achievements of as many as I can. The role of the Club Captain is key as it is one that sees, meets and talks to all members of the club allowing an understanding of why people want to run with us. Could be just to run with others to keep fit, some to run the dreaded ‘5k park runs’ (shudders), or the more sensible distances of a half marathon or full (personal opinion obvs 😊). It is great to talk to members about their running whatever it may be, as well as promoting the club and events – I just hope whoever takes over formally at the AGM will continue to do so and be pro-active with the club and the members.

So, in the words of Douglas Adams – so long and thanks for all the fish! (Ok, I am not disappearing completely).

The Mystery of the Scary Helmet!

It was another dark, dank, cold & wet Friday evening when the Gang got a call mysterious call, and all that could be heard was, ‘Ruh-roh-Raggy, Raggy!!!’ It was clear Scooby was on the line and in trouble as he yelled out the name of his best pal, Shaggy. Fred, the fearless leader of the gang said, ‘looks like we have another mystery on our hands!’ and got the gang together into the Mystery Machine and headed to the last place they knew Scooby was- Darley Park, near the food stand.

On arrival to the Park, Daphne exclaimed, ‘Jeepers!’ as she looked about to see about 600 suspects all milling about discussing issues as shoes, mud and beer. It seems an event was on the cards but were all these people were using it as a ruse to cover up the dog-napping of poor Scooby! At one particular tent, Shaggy was given some numbers, a plastic tube and pins. Velma, clearly seeing what was going, said ‘Jinks – it’s a race. We put these numbers on and run round following the scary signs. I suspect it is a relay, as firstly, we have the same number but with different letters, secondly – this plastic tube is clearly a baton.’

Fred exclaimed, ‘Let’s split up gang! Shaggy, you go first down the dark path on your own!’

‘Zoinks!! Why is it all ways me going first,’ whimpered Shaggy, who was not happy at the thought!

‘Would you do it for a Scooby Snack?’ asked Daphne.

Well, that was it, Shaggy was off, shouting ‘I’m coming to get ya Scoob!’ as he grabbed the baton and headed to the start area followed by Daphne. They both had to listen to the man on the mic talk about changeovers. Shaggy then followed the masses to the start, and as little drizzle fell, the start was on – with Shaggy (aided by snacks – hope there was no doping test for scooby snacks?) charging off into the dark, then up the hill through the woods before heading down the slippery hill. More darkness as he ran on the back section following those scary signs before a small loop round to hand the baton over the Daphne. ‘Zoinks – no sign of my best buddy!’.

With that Daphne, was off into the dark, on the trail of hints for Scooby while Shaggy went looking for more snacks to eat. The next thing the remaining gang heard was Daphne shouting, ‘Jeepers, I am in trouble-help!’. Velma just added. ‘Oh no, not again. Daphne is in trouble!’

Will the gang save Daphne? How many Scooby Snacks can Shaggy eat? Will they ever find Scooby Doo? Find out more, in Part 2 of ‘The Mystery of the Scary Helmet’...

AND FINALLY...
15 Hours With Amelia Boone

A little less than 10 minutes long, this documentary is one of the shortest on our list, but it still packs a punch.

The film follows Amelia Boone, one of the best ultrarunners and obstacle course athletes in the world, through her devastating fall from and return to competition after she suffered a stress fracture in her femur in 2016.

For runners who are sidelined with an injury or are going through other hardships, this movie will remind you that even the worst challenges, heartbreaks, and frustrations can be overcome—and you’ll be stronger because of them.
