New Positions available at Mickleover Running Club

Would you like to help shape the growth, success and direction of Mickleover Running Club? As a club we are always on the lookout for volunteers to help with the club and take us forward.

Very soon we shall be looking for a new Club Captain and Run Co-Ordinator with both roles being central to the success of the club.

Working with the clubs committee the Run Co-Ordinator and Club Captain ensure that we not only provide fun, friendly and safe runs week in and week out but we also compete and represent ourselves to the best of our ability irrespective of where we actually finish.

If you are interested in either of these roles, and would like to find out more or interested in supporting the club in any other way please do not hesitate to get in touch with my self.

The run will take in the Honeycomb in Mickleover, The Seven Wells near Etwall, The Cow in Dalbury, The Bluebell at Kirk Langley, The Mundy Arms in Mackworth and the Great Northern in Mickleover. Ewan
Club Run Leader

Ewan is our latest Run Leader to gain the Leader in Running Fitness Qualification!

Ewan’s report from the training:

Earlier in the year I volunteered to help with Run Leading at the club to ensure we have run leaders to cover all the runs we have planned on Tuesdays and Thursdays. As the club expands it’s important we have enough people on hand to support all the sessions we advertise. I’ve been running on and off for 35 years, so I thought it would be great to help out and support MRC.

I booked on the Leadership in Running Fitness session at the YMCA in Aspley in Nottingham, the venue was ideal as there was a park next to the building to enable us to put into practice what we learned on the course. There were people of all levels of running experience on the course. Experienced runners like myself, some people pretty new to running but catching the bug, and also those who were setting up their own running groups. It was a great blend, and really interesting finding out what other clubs do.

I expected the course to focus primarily on safety when leading a group going on a run (what we do on a typical Tuesday and Thursday), and whilst it did have this, there was much focus on delivering a training session, providing ideas on what to do to add variety to club runs and in turn help fellow athletes’ performance.

Albeit I have been running for a long time, it was soon evident that whilst I probably know quite a lot about running, I didn’t know much about setting up training sessions, flexibility, basic physiology or how to prevent injuries. All this and more was covered on the day.

We started with looking at running posture, ideally running tall with high hips and relaxed shoulders with efficient arm action.

We the focused on warm ups- dynamic stretching, and cool downs when you might do some static stretching. Being a typical runner, I hardly stretch at all. I think I need to up my game on this, to develop my flexibility and prevent injuries. Many of us get so focused on racking up the strava miles that we forget that flexibility and variety in sessions can improve performance more than an extra few miles a week. I committed to myself that I’d lose a few miles running a week and instead do some flexibility work instead. It’ll pay dividends in the long run (pardon the pun).

After this we got into planning a training session through a lens of safety, organisation, instruction, explanation and demonstration. This would involve warm up, session, cooling down, but really thinking about how this could be made fun and involve runners of different abilities and experience at the same time.

Then it was up to us. In groups we led short sessions that included activities like fixed point reps, out and back runs, speed play fartlek and meet and retreat. All great activities that will add variety to club sessions and help you if you have a specific performance improvement target by increasing endurance, speed and strength.

It was a super day (apart from me getting injured when sprinting…another reason to start doing some flexibility work), and I recommend it to anyone wanting to become a Run Leader. It gives you confidence that you can run lead, but also a great repertoire of skills and knowledge to share with others.

I think it also presents a challenge. How do we develop our club nights to have more options? Alan has already made big strides in offering up coaching sessions to develop performance as part of his coaching qualification. There’s definitely more opportunity to add some more variety to our meets and help us all become better runners.

Committee Comment: Congratulations Ewan!! Without the Run Leaders we wouldn’t be able to offer the range of club runs that we do. Your Club Membership fee funds the LiRF certification and helps build and sustain the club. If you would like to help out on club runs please have a chat with any of the Run Leaders who will be more than happy to tell you what it’s involved.

THUNDERRUN CAPTAINS HIGHLIGHTS
Raj - Mickleover Angels
Teamwork
Teamwork at its best. We all pulled together, supported each other especially when it got really tough. This year we had even more mrc’ers to support us over those gruelling paths and hills. I know that I couldn’t have completed it without the help and encouragement not only from Mickleover Angels and from the club.

Fun
Over the course of the weekend it was fun to spend time with fellow members and enjoy a drink (or three) at some hideous time of day. Getting to know each other as people was amazing.

Determination
Lap after lap they were being ticked off by each team’s board. The conditions were horrific but it’s because everyone literally kept digging in and fighting to get through it. On a course like that, the physical ability will only get you half way, the rest was purely down to being focused and ‘getting the job done’ attitude.

Well done to everyone who did it. You’re all amazing.

Rob – Mickleover All Stars
Highlights
• “Mind the dip” constantly being called out
• Doug going over 6 times
• Ian “I don’t want to do the Thunderun Run” Porter smashing it
• Panic over our pitch when we first got there
• The Rave in the woods

Apart from that it’s just a bit of blur…

Alan: the View from Beauty & the Beasties
Having seen the TR from 2018 and the community feel the event it offered, was quite excited about this.

My team of 5: Lucinda, Joe, Steve, Dougal and myself were very happy just to get out and enjoy the event. Did we have a plan – well sort of – loads of ideas, but nothing concrete and discussions with all proved excellent – as we went with the flow.

The start of the event was bright warm sunshine when Steve set off at mid-day. I simple rotation of Steve, Joe, Dougal, myself & Lucinda was the order – and we kept to it. The first real ‘issue’ was the rain that hit at 2.30pm which lead to a downpour while I was on the route. This made the course soft and through the woods tricky under foot with people slipping and sliding. Our flexible approach proved key – as we talked and reformulated a new plan – based on conditions. Which we stuck to, until the end of the event.

Overall – the team did 23 laps – which we, as a team, were really pleased about. The over night runs where tough – and not due to lack of sleep, but underfoot – and so we sensibly slowed – getting around in 1 piece was key.

However, seeing Dougal at 12.05 on Sunday afternoon as he closed in on the final 100m, or so, and joining him along with the other team members was fab and the running together over that last 100m as a team meant so much for all of us. Can I just a very big thank you to the team – for the effort over the weekend. The support we gave each one of us was great and it was that means so much to myself – the team effort.

Tracey: Lunachicks and Lunadude

• Ian rediscovering his running mojo on lap 1…..fantastic to see!!
• ‘Looking Fresh’…..Kel’s supportive cheering to runners who were looking far from fresh!!
• Ian and Toms’ face when I admitted to not having watched Stranger Things (you’ll both be pleased to hear I’ve binge watched Series 1 this week!!)
• Doug cheering on all the Soloists and sounding like he knew every single one of them
• Sharon…smiling (a bit) as she ran past on her second lap confirming she no longer hated me quite as much as she did after the first lap 😊

Mud, sweat & beers (Matt Buller, Andy Saunders, Callum Woodward, Lewis O’Grady, Paul Dolman)
• Rain. Man did it rain on Saturday afternoon.
• Mud. There was plenty, thank the lord for trail shoes!
• Sleep. Pretty much abandon all hope. A couple of hours is plenty isn’t it?
• Team. Matt & Andy inspiring the rest of us to get a move on with their ridiculous pace and consistency across all laps and conditions.
• Team. Callum quietly going about his business racking up impressive times and keeping us in touch with the top 10.
• Team. Lewis and myself keeping things ticking over and accumulating laps.
• Change-over. Surely the nobody would be late and miss their first change-over? Especially the captain? Sorry team…
• Position. We completed 26 laps and finished 6th in the male category. Proud of you guys!
• Experience. Wow. Just wow! Thunder Run we’ll see you in 2020.

Congratulations to Alan P who recently achieved the Coach in Running Fitness Certification.

Alan has self-funded this course – many of you attended (and enjoyed) his recent sessions which were held alongside the normal club sessions. Well done Alan….good luck in taking it forward.
