2021/22 membership update
Hi!, Firstly I’d like to thank you for your support and understanding over the past year. As you’ll no doubt be able to relate to, my role and tasks as Membership Secretary didn’t quite follow the path I thought they would when we re-opened our last renewals process at the beginning of March 2020!

In the unprecedented circumstances it was difficult to know what decisions to make as a club and when to make them, but the overwhelming support we received from the members helped us to get through the year in good shape.

As we are still unsure of what we will be able to offer as a club this year, and when we will be able to resume we have taken the decision to drop the membership fees for this year as follows:

EA Affiliated Members £25
EA affiliation not only gives you a discount on any affiliated races over the next 12 months (fingers crossed!) but also as a club we have benefitted from significant grants to train new run leaders and the upcoming Club Run Virtual sessions this past year.

The more EA affiliated members we have the more London Marathon entries the club are awarded for internal distribution. Also you have to be EA affiliated to enter the MRC ballot for any such places.

Social Member £10
Social Member covers your membership to Mickleover Running Club, and allows you to represent Mickleover Running Club in the Cross Country League.
Second Claim Member £10
For runners with EA affiliation with another athletics club, unfortunately you won't be able to represent the Mickleover Running Club at in the Cross Country League.

Renewals are open from now until 31st March 2021 and can be submitted by clicking the link below.

Thank you again for all of your support, I truly hope we can all run together very soon!

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to get in touch.

---------------------------------

Just a quick note to say thank you to Paul for his hard work on this, its not been easy over the past 12 or so months trying to sort out the membership, you have a done cracking job.

...and if anyone needs any help with Excel... Paul Dolman is your man!

RETURN TO CLUB RUNS
With the announcements made this week by Boris and England Athletics releasing information the committee have been working tirelessly trying to sort out the return of club runs.

Please bear with us while we go through all the paper work. You will recieve an email once we get everything in place for a return.

Hopefully we will see you very very soon!

book recommendation : Science of Running
Having not being able to run properly for three months now, due to long Covid, I felt I needed something to kick start my appetite again.

This book has done that and I hope I can inspire you to find your mojo if like many of us, we feel the pandemic has hindered our training.

Written by Chris Napier, a Canadian Physiotherapist allows for a wealth of Physiology and Anatomy, but without being too science heavy.

His Coach, Jerry Ziak also helped write the book and so also brings in aspects of training plans and fitness etc.

😊 I think the positives out weigh the negatives for this book…

1) I love that this book has chapters, allowing for quick reference to the relevant sections you wish to read.

2) Illustrated pictures of stretching, anatomy and strength training useful again for quick fix.

3) The training plans at the back of the book are complex to interpret initially, however a range of distances are detailed.

4) Running drills are included! Something often forgotten…

5) Not a heavy read – small sections of writing on the pages allow for easy reading.

6) Large ‘Prevention of injury’ (a biggy!), section detailing common complaints and how to manage them.

7) Cheeky statistics dotted within the book – maybe useful for a pub quiz one day!

8) Pretty reasonably priced too! RRP £14.99 but at the works £6.00! The Works link.

🙁

1) Perhaps lacks detail in certain sections of the book, specifically Nutrition and Recovery but does touch on these, deeming them important. For an amazing Nutrition book if interested – Sports Nutrition (Anita Bean). Covers everything!

£16.99 – Blackwells. Blackwells link.

2) The training plans are incredibly weighty. Lots of information all on one page…

3) Does allude to the reader having some experience in running but don’t let this put you off, still a very informative read covering all bases.

To conclude, a solid overview of running incorporating a wide variety of chapters:

• Anatomy
• Injury
• Stretching
• Strength
• Training programmes

Useful for quick reference guide but if training for a specific distance, perhaps more useful getting a distance specific book/plan.

Happy reading!

Hannah

Running Down Dementia
We have been contacted by Alzheimer’s Research UK regarding a virtual event they are organising.

They are launching Running Down Dementia event for 2021 which kick offs in next month in March.

The challenge aims to get people running while fundraising for dementia research.

Running Down Dementia is a great way to get moving and keep track of your amazing efforts while club nights are on pause. With every step you take, you’ll help fund major breakthroughs in research and give hope to the 34 million people affected by dementia.

There is no minimum distance to cover, or minimum fundraising amount – set your own targets to challenge yourself!

You could aim to run a marathon over the course of a week, aim to run every day for a month, or run a virtual version of a well-known distance like Lands End to John O’Groats.

You could also set a whole club collective challenge – for example by splitting into teams and hosting a virtual relay, or setting one collective mileage or time goal.

People with dementia and their families have been some of the worst affected by the pandemic, meaning research into treatments is more vital than ever. We are so grateful to everyone who is fundraising for us at this challenging time, and we remain determined in our mission to bring about the first life-changing dementia treatment.

You can find out more and sign up on our website: Running Down Dementia | ARUK (thetreblechallenge.org)

CLUB
WHEN DID YOU START RUNNING AND WHEN DID YOU JOIN MICKLEOVER RUNNING CLUB?
I started regular running at 39 when I quit smoking. I joined and helped set up the club with the privilege of doing the first MRC run leader course and attempting the run leader role on the committee. WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING IN A RUNNING CLUB? Meeting new people and gaining new friendships.
WHEN AND WHO DO YOU RUN WITH THE CLUB?
I run Tuesdays and Thursdays when I get the chance. I’ve mainly run with Ewan and Malc during lockdown. I’d probably have run with far more people if it wasn’t for my hopeless ability to remember faces and names. This is the reason I asked Rob to do this ‘on the run with’ as I’ve recently took part in research with Bournemouth University where, after a series of tests, they diagnosed my with ‘Face Blindness (Prosopagnosia). For years I thought I was just hopeless at faces and so have tended to look at the ground or smile at everyone due to generally not having a clue if I’ve spoken to them before. I’ve often asked Louise “who was that?” To which she has sometimes replied “that’s ***** from the running club!”

So please accept my apologies if I’ve seemed distant or clueless in the past. I also apologise for future club runs especially when I lead runs and start the same conversation as we’ve probably had the week before.

YOU
TELL US YOUR HISTORY OF RUNNING?
I was forced to do cross country running across Mickleover meadows as a school child. This put me off for years! I then did the odd run in my 30’s. I then joined Derwent Runners when I was 40 but was always miffed that there was no club in Mickleover, happily MRC is now alive and kicking. I’ve run road marathons mostly but over the last couple of years I’ve gone off road which is where my running feels happiest.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOU BEST RUNNING ACHIEVEMENT?
Coming 7th in my first Ultra run in Anglesey (Firestarter) and finally completing the Nomad Ultra in June.
WHAT IS YOUR RUNNING AMBITION?
To keep running so I can keep eating and drinking without piling the pounds on.
WHY DO YOU RUN?
Mental health and the freedom I get from running out in the countryside with no one else around.
FAVOURITE PLACE TO RUN?
Off road and coastal paths
TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORST RUN?
Never had a bad run, just ones impacted by injury which is part of the deal I guess
BEST RUNNING PHRASE?
The body is built to run, it’s just the mind which stops you (Haile Gebrselassie)
HAVE YOU EVER LOST YOUR RUNNING MOJO AND HOW DID YOU GET IT BACK?
Never lost it
BEST ROUTE AROUND MICKLEOVER/DERBY?
Fields around Radbourne, the best ones are unplanned, resulting in cuts and stings (apologies for those I’ve subjected to this over the years)
WHO WOULD BE ON YOUR WISH LIST TO RUN WITH?
My dog, but sadly she’s getting too old for the off roaders
WORST/BEST RUNNING ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN?
Run to what feels best for you
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT WHEN YOU RUN?
All manner of shite
RUN TO TIME OR DISTANCE?
Now I mostly go off road it’s distance
RACE/EVENTS
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE RACE AND WHY?
London Marathon 2015. I ran it for Arthritis UK following my mum’s death. She always wanted to visit the Shard but was not well enough due to arthritis so I did it for her. Also my fastest marathon
TELL US ABOUT YOUR PRE-RACE RITUALS AND FOOD AND DRINK.
I don’t particularly have one apart from try and avoid booze the night before
IF YOU COULD CHOOSE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD TO RUN, WHERE WOULD IT BE?
Angkor Wat
WHAT’S YOUR ONE RACE ESSENTIAL?
Bald head protector
WOULD YOU RUN A MARATHON WITHOUT GETTING A MEDAL?
Did the Nomad Ultra with no race medal, although my stepdaughter made me one. But yes I’d run without one.

Should You Pause Your Watch?

Do you pause your GPS watch when you run? Maybe you got stuck at a road crossing, need a breather, or pause it during recoveries in interval sessions?

The Running Channel answer the debate of ‘should you pause your watch when you run?’ As well as giving you some alternatives to consider.
