Rest and Recovery!

With so many races in the schedule, and so many members taking part in them there’s been quite a bit of discussion between people about training, distances, number of runs, miles completed, pacing, nutrition and so on.

What most of us perhaps fail to also include in this is the rest and recovery phase.

There’s a good article here which provides further information:

A – Z of Running

F is for ... Fartlek

and ... Foot strike

F is for ... Foam roller/rolling
a form of self torture!!

We want to know your PBs!

As you all know we like celebrating success, so we have created a Hall of Fame for our members on the club website which will list each PB for each distance.

This will not only allow us to celebrate your running achievements but will also provide us with the clubs members records for age groups too.

We can then build up a club history to reflect back on in years to come.

Now we know not everyone wants to do a marathon or would prefer to stick to 10Ks which is completely fine.

We also know that not all of you enter races and you will all you’re your own watch/app registered PB’s.

Unfortunately we have to take PBs from official UK registered events as these guarantee the measurement of the distance.

There will however be a section for Park Runs PBs too - this will be for Markeaton Parkrun only (as each course is slightly different and whilst measured it's not a UK registered event).

What we need from you:

  • Your name
  • Name of event (must be an official UK registered event for formally measured distances)
  • Each distance (must be since you became a MRC member)
  • Must be official chip time (not your watch time!)
  • Your age category at the time

Please can you email your information to results@mickleoverrunningclub.co.uk and if you keep smashing your PBs then make sure you keep us updated!

Races, Results and Events Update

The last 2 weeks has been, again, an excellent 2 weeks for the club and its members, so here we go...

Edinburgh Marathon

The last of the Spring Marathons is Edinburgh and the idea of a 300mile journey North did not stop Ewan and Lucinda from taking the high road to the Scottish Capital.

The on-going exceptional weather for the late spring continued as the sun was out again, warming up the crowds but presenting tryng conditions for the runners.

Ewan finished in an excellent time of 3.21.28, proudly boasting his name and club on his vest while Lucinda finished her first marathon just under the 4hr mark in 3.57.43.

She has been on record as saying ‘That’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done’. Now time to book another Lucinda!! Congrats to the two of you for completing the race.

Derby Half

The Derby Half/Ramathon – so the sun had to be out, now in its 4th year and each one has been met with blazing sun.

This was the 4th event in the Derby Run series and the 3rd in our own club champs, and over 25 members met near the start area for this local event.

We had the usual group photo (a must at these events), and as 9.15 approached we all went off to the various start pens.

The route was very similar to the last couple of years as it took us through the City before heading out along London Road – where a cheering Ray stood, doing a sterling job marshalling and then on to Elvaston Castle.

Once round the grounds it was long the dreaded path of the river before turning back to the Stadium. It was warm and muggy, and everybody felt it.

Steve R was first in for the club, with Ross about 4mins behind him, James K was next heading up a number of us including Andy, Paul, Doug and myself.

As for the Ladies, Vicky was first home finishing very strong (can confirm that as she stormed past me in the last 1/2mile), not too far ahead of Emma, with Beckie the 3rd lady home.

It was tough out there on race day. The course should be near ideal for PBs – but for some strange reason it is energy sapping.

Maybe it’s 4mile drag along London Road, the twisting paths of Elvaston, the long 2mile section along the river which is slightly uphill or the fact that it was very warm!

All of the members said it was tough, very tough, but some did run well. Vicky with her storming finish, Emma (again) on the back of a good spring, and Beckie setting a PB.

Dougal ran very well, especially coming so soon after his previous half.

A year ago, I went to the Ramathon and saw about 8 members from MRC (I was not officially a member then), this year 25+ took part.

It shows the progress of the club, the numbers we now have and we are now very much a running club.

As for the event itself, not sure if it was me, but it did seem to have lost a little of its soul and felt like just any other big city event?

Derby Run Series

The club standing in the DRS is very impressive at the moment, as we stand 5th in table.

Above us are the might of Derwent, Team Derby Runner, Long Eaton – but ahead of Derby AC, Heanor, Sinfin, Cheaspeake, Rolls Royce & Dynamos.

For this, it is important members, who are eligible, to enter under the MRC banner – due to the scoring system, all members who finish a race gain points.

Club Championship

The Derby Half was the 3rd race in our club champs, and now nearing the half way mark it is slowly beginning to take shape.

With the Men’s, Jamie decided to have a rest leaving it wide open for Steve to take the lead, but Ross is not too far behind.

James K has now creeped a few points ahead of Paul D, with Jake and Rob H making up the group who have competed in all 3 events so far.

For the Ladies Beckie is still leading and maintaining her good running, with Nic & Tracey the other runners who have completed the 3 events.

However, both Vicky & Emma are not too far behind and one cannot ignore Sophie. The 4th race is the Tara Kinder and as far I am aware – there are still places available.

Hairy Helmet Relays 15th June

This is all located in Darley Abbey Park, a 2.2(ish) mile blast round the park.

Ross will be bringing along his big tent, there are drinks and food on offer, with entertainment.

And if I read correctly, Paul Dolman and his band are one of the acts.

With all this, why not make it a club social get together – and join in the fun at Darley Abbey – race starts at 7.15 – but lets get together earlier to support our teams and enjoy, hopefully, a good summers evening.

Oh – it might be worth bring kit – just in case some people can’t make it (after all, real life does get in the way: kids, work, family), you never know.
